I woke to the alarm this morning, and I hear this voice saying get your hand off it!
Is your cell phone the first thing you grab in the morning after a good night sleep? well it is in our household 😉 Off to the loo I go to clear the morning emails with my iPhone 6+ in hand! I see a few emails that I hadn’t cleared from the day before, so I thought I’d send a brief message to those people saying I am on to it!
Got showered and dressed, jumped on my “God given Three Screen iMac Desktop Computer” and checked to see if I had any new internet orders, my partner Cathy had an appointment to get a X-ray on her foot at 8:00am. Next we’re off in the car checked that I had my dash cam on ready to record any shocking car action that I maybe able to use on Shocking Christchurch Drivers facebook page (Did you know, I look after 38 facebook pages), Cathy is now in the passenger seat on her “hand me down iPhone5s” I am guessing she is scrolling through the iPhone5s looking at her notifications checking that she has not missed any action over night.
Now we are in the main waiting room at Southern Cross both of us have iPhones in hand, another lady has her laptop and sitting beside her is the daughter, happily listening to music with some VERY BIG headphones on! I did see one man talking to is wife quietly, I am sure he was saying look at them all “everybody is using some kind of device”. It’s our turn to move to the smaller waiting room, next we spot the sign telling us to switch off all electronic devices, Lucky it is only a false alarm it’s only when in the room when getting X-rayed, I’m sure all could hear our big sigh of relief! Cathy hands me her iPhone5s and she goes in for the foot X-ray, I can only imagine how hard it would’ve been for her.
Time to do some business…
Check my email, here is one I can reply to now… but 1st! I check out the persons LinkedIn, Facebook and Website, I reply to them with a short email saying “I will call you later on this afternoon” O what the heck they may not be very quick at replying to their emails (like me), so I’ll send him a quick text so we can start chatting and work out a good time to have a chat. Three hours later and I still have not had any replies, so this is telling me that they are not as tech savvy as me, even though I could tell they were an iPhone user, maybe this is why they were asking for some social media support.
On to my next email that came in while I was sitting in the waiting room, from Chris Taylor (Winning Habits) I’ve managed to get Chris up to speed, he has the app Heytell (Just Get it) and also has an iPhone (See my Business Apps Blog), Chris still prefers to email, so I once again did a quick email reply (using voice recognition) next I received a text from Chris, so our conversation was going real time… I starting using the built in Voice Messaging tools that comes with the iPhone and start voicing him, as this is the best way for me to communicate with Chris, TIP “find the best medium to communicate with your client and then use that” So after getting some txt message from Chris in reply to my 5-6 voice messages, Chris decides it’s just going to be easier for him to just ring me (he gave up on the use of technology), so I explained, I can’t really talk right now because I’m in the waiting room with others, I had been voice replying to him in between people walking around so I didn’t look like a weirdo, so now I am that rude guy walking around Southern Cross talking on my cell phone (Thanks Chris), we ended up floating in an appointment sometime next week to help get him up to speed editing his Website and at this time I will make sure he is more comfortable using voice technology!
Why am I telling you all this stuff…
It’s taken about 12 months for Chris to embrace technology and start using it on a daily basis, we now use FaceTime video messaging, Screen sharing and it is just part of the way we do business. So the difference between Chris and yourself is that Chris started having a go, Chris now uploads short videos to his YouTube account, also a uploads the same videos to Facebook account then he will write a blog on this website and link them all together, Chris already had a website, I trashed it, built him a new WordPress (Open Source) search engine friendly social media savvy site, my clever Piwik (Ask for a Demo) stats showed he was only getting 2-3 individual visitors per day, he is now getting an average of 20 per day. Using social media, technology to communicate with your peers is like mould, it grows slowly and eventually will turn into traffic/business.
I have to say some of the videos that Chris did originally were not that professional (Sorry Chris) however this has now lead to Chris getting four or five professional videos done for him and they feature at the top of all the other videos, also he has certainly improved at taking his own video content, “be good today because tomorrow never comes” A wise man may say you can simply delete/remove the “not that professional” videos a wiser man would leave them there to get the free traffic.

For those who know me understand I have dyslexia so voice recognition is the way I handle most of my correspondence.
So how much do you use your smart phone? Do you use it to its full potential? Once upon a time it was said that computers where only used up to 10% of there capacity, the very last thing I use my smart phone for is to talk on 😉 I would on average upload 10 photos and two videos to the Internet every day the iPhone6 Plus comes with a state-of-the-art full resolution camera, at one of my business Networking Meetings I took six photos and one 30 second video upload to Elite6 Business Networking Facebook Page, I was at Rotary last night, we had a guest speaker, they inducted new member so I added 7 more photos to the same page, I went to the supermarket to get some ginger ale for my bourbon, took a small video of a car parked in a disabled park and uploaded it to Shocking Christchurch Drivers all these done in real time and between other things, it didn’t take any time out of my day.
So if your technology is outdated go and purchase a new iPhone6 Plus, increase the data limit on your mobile plan, record a few small videos, make sure you LinkedIn account is up-to-date, set up a Facebook page, make sure your company branding is up to speed, get a nice profile photo of yourself. You may be surprised most people will actually check out your branding social media presence before they make contact.
This is my mobile signature on my phone maybe can appreciate it more after reading this blog…
